Educators from Pittsylvania County were among teams from 32 school divisions across Virginia that gathered for an education conference on Monday, March 2, 2020, where they shared ideas on how to accelerate innovation and promote deeper learning in public schools. This is the second cohort of the Virginia is for Learners Innovation Network.
The goals of the network are to promote deeper learning and active learned engagement at all grade levels. It also aims to align instruction and assessment with the expectations of the profile of a Virginia Graduate, which was adopted by the State Board of Education in 2016.
Divisions that are represented include Amherst County, Bristol, Chesapeake, Dickenson County, Fairfax County, Henrico County, King William, Lunenburg County, Nelson County, New Kent County, Nottoway County, Richmond, Shenandoah County, Staunton and Waynesboro among others.
The conference took place on Monday and Tuesday in Richmond, and began with a discussion about the future of innovation in Virginia and the world and how networking can advance innovation to meet the needs of diverse learners.
The network seeks to implement systemic innovations over a two-year period specific to local community needs and to establish the Virginia is for Learners Innovation Network as a permanent structure for sharing innovations and best practices.
The teams will gather again for the Virginia is for Learners Innovation Network Institutes in July, October and January.
