Steven D. Mayhew Appointed as the next Superintendent of Pittsylvania County Schools
The Pittsylvania County School Board is very appreciative of the many responses provided for the Superintendent Search Survey. These responses were reviewed with a focus on the vision for the School Division and qualities and abilities for the next Division Superintendent. After a thorough review process that included the receipt of applications from a diverse pool of highly qualified candidates, and interviews of great candidates, the Board has completed its Superintendent Search process.
The School Board is pleased to announce and welcome Mr. Steven D. Mayhew as the finalist to become the new Division Superintendent for Pittsylvania County Schools effective July 1, 2025.
Mr. Mayhew has been employed with Pittsylvania County Schools for twenty-four (24) years and has served in the following positions:
Teacher – Biology/Chemistry
Assistant Principal – Elementary
Principal – Elementary and High School
Assistant Superintendent for Administration
He currently holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Radford University, Masters of Science Degree in Educational Administration from Longwood University, an Education Specialist Degree in Educational Administration from Liberty University, and is completing his Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership from Liberty University.
During his service with Pittsylvania County Schools, Mr. Mayhew has always worked collaboratively with teachers and staff. He models dedication, conscientiousness, consideration and an exceptional ability to engage students and inspire a love for learning. He is an individual of high integrity, is genuine and no stranger to hard work. He possesses a strong ability to make good decisions and is a tireless champion of doing whatever it takes to promote the dignity and success of every child and colleague in the schools and the Division. While teaching at Dan River High School, his students consistently exceeded expectations on SOL assessments and grade level instruction. As a principal, Mr. Mayhew was influential in making sure the schools met and exceeded all State and federal accountability measures. As an administrator, he was instrumental in ensuring the Division continued operations during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as completing all other assigned tasks and responsibilities. Also, during a time when teaching vacancies were at a maximum for many school divisions, Mr. Mayhew met the challenges of filling these positions with qualified individuals in order for students to receive quality instruction.
