Superintendent Application Process
Candidates must be licensed as a superintendent in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Questions regarding the requirements should be directed to the Department of Teacher Education and Licensure, Virginia Department of Education, P. O. Box 2120, Richmond, VA 23218-2120 (804) 786-2302.
The Board has set the following criteria to be used in the selection of superintendent:
Qualifications:
Professional Preparation:
• Valid Division Superintendent license
• Strong background in curriculum, instruction, personnel development and management
Personal Traits:
• Always ethical, moral, and honest
• Demonstrates ability to build trust and credibility with all stakeholders
• Strong communication skills
• High energy and enthusiasm
• Visionary, creative and decisive leader with the proven ability to implement
Professional Experience:
• Central Office supervision (preferred)
• Prior principalship (preferred)
• Classroom teaching (5 years preferred)
Application Requirements:
• Letter of intent indicating qualifications and reasons for interest in position
• A completed official application form
• A current curriculum vitae
• College/University transcripts
• Four (4) letters of recommendation
• Evidence of eligibility for Virginia Superintendent’s License
Completed applications and all supporting materials are requested by February 28, 2025. After a careful review of all applications, the Board expects to conduct interviews with selected candidates and announce its selection during the months of March/April, 2025.
