In November 2022, voters in Pittsylvania County approved a 1% sales tax increase to fund school infrastructure projects.
The tax took effect on July 1, 2023, and will remain in place until June 30, 2042. The revenue generated is strictly allocated for capital improvements in the county’s schools, including:
• Addition of enclosed corridors to detached gymnasiums at elementary schools
• Grading for expansions at Kentuck Elementary School
• Upgrading HVAC systems, windows, and other essential components in multiple schools
• Replacing mobile classrooms with permanent structures
• Enhancing school security with secure entrance vestibules
Pittsylvania County received its first payment from the sales tax increase in September 2024, with an expected annual revenue of approximately $3.6 million.
