The Ringneck Snake [Diadophis punctatus] averages in length from 10 to 20 in.

The yellow or orange collar is a reliable mark of identification. This specimen was found when a student overturned a rotten log exposing the snake. Although believed to be a common snake, it is rarely seen. A few are discovered while a person is raking leaves on the edge of a forested area. The ringneck seems to prefer moist places. Experts say that the ringneck feasts mostly on earthworms and small salamanders, frogs, and other small reptiles.
