Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) male, is one of our most common local swallowtails. It has been chosen as the official Virginia State Butterfly. Sunflowers, as pictured here, often lure butterflies into their lair to share hidden pollen. Perhaps some of the swallowtails are merely seeking a convenient resting spot.
