Diana Fritillary Butterflies

The Diana Fritillary (Speyeria diana) was once well established in the northwestern tip of Pittsylvania County. In the past several decades, it seems to have retreated to counties west of us. Its former population here in our area was associated with birdfoot violets. Also, these dianas were often seen visiting the flowers of the Joe-pie-weed (Eupatorium fistulosum). Fortunately, these beautiful butterflies seem to be well established in isolated populations throughout the foothills and mountains of Virginia. The contrast between the brownish male and bluish female (see picture) sets this fritillary apart from the others in the genus.
