The Jack O’Lantern Mushroom [Omphalotus olearius] has a somewhat unique habitat. It is most often found growing in crowded clumps at the base of hardwood trees. Smaller groups may be seen growing from buried roots.
Oftentimes in summer wet spells this mushroom forms large shelflike masses at the base of rotten trees. This is most noticeable when found in a town or city with green lawns surrounding this bright orange species. If a fresh section of the Jack O’Lantern is placed in a sealed plastic bag, it may glow in the dark. Carry it into a dark closet and wait for your eyes to be accustomed to the darkness. It may take several peeks.
With any luck you should witness a pale green luminescence. Some older mushroom
manuals classify this species under various generic and specific names.
