Last week, the
Virginia Department of Education (VDOE)
updated its online report cards for schools,
school divisions and the Commonwealth with
data on the performance of student subgroups
on 2011-2012 Standards of Learning (SOL)
tests in English, mathematics, science and
history/social science. The report cards are
available in the “Virginia School Report
Card” section of the VDOE website. The
updated data include test-by-test pass rates
and subject-area pass rates for Asian,
black, economically disadvantaged, Hispanic,
limited-English proficient and white
students, as well as students with
disabilities and other subgroups. The impact
of the rigorous new mathematics SOL tests
introduced during 2011-2012 was evident as
subject-area pass rates in mathematics fell
by 8 to 25 points when compared with
performance during 2010-2011on the old
tests. So, how did we do?

In 2012-2013,
two prizes of $25,000.00 will be available
from the McGlothlin Foundation to be awarded
to a Kindergarten through 5th
grade public school teacher and a
middle/high school public school teacher who
each excel in their fields. This award is
intended to recognize innovative full-time
classroom teachers with at least five years
of experience from core curriculum areas who
have not previously won major awards in
education. It is my understanding that
$10,000.00 of the award money is to be used,
within a year, for international travel to
broaden the thinking and experience of the
winning teachers. In 2006, Pittsylvania
County Schools boasted a McGlothlin Award
winner. Ms. Jennie Finney, former 5th
grade instructor at Stony Mill Elementary
School, used her winnings to visit Australia
and the Great Barrier Reef. Should you

Students will
be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. on Friday,
September 21, 2012. The remainder of the day
is designated as a Teacher Workday. Teachers
will use this time to plan, consult, grade
papers, prepare bulletin boards, etc.
Please be reminded that all teacher
aides and full-time nurses work a full day.
School divisions will celebrate Constitution
Day on September 17, 2012. All schools may
determine what kind of educational programs
are appropriate for their students. Some
informational resources pertaining to the
Constitution that may be useful in planning
educational activities are listed athttp://www.constitutionday.com/index.html.
Also, the United States Education
Department’s (USED) website at
http://www.ed.gov/
may be helpful in lesson preparation.

Recently, the Dan River
Middle School Future Farmers of America (FFA),
Chatham Middle School FFA, Chatham High School
FFA and Gretna High School FFA attended the
Southside Area FFA COLT (Chapter Officer
Leadership Training) in Bedford County at
Mountain Run Farms. Upon arrival, the officers
went to workshops to learn the duties and
responsibilities of their positions. During the
training the students practiced teamwork and
cooperation. Also, the group listened to Mr. Ben
Coleman, owner of the 900 acre farm as he shared
how he successfully operates his farm without
any equipment.
Recently, the
Tunstall High School Fellowship of Christian
Athletes (FCA) Club raised donations for
God’s Pit Crew. After hearing of the devastation
in the Gulf Coast region of the U.S., the
members of the FCA thought it would be a great
idea to get the school involved in generating
donations of fresh bottled water for the
disaster relief organization. By
coordinating an inter-school homeroom
competition, the student body as well as faculty
and staff collected over 164 cases of bottled
water and raised a $250.00 cash donation to
God’s Pit Crew. Ms. Tara Mills' homeroom should
be congratulated for donating an average of 66
bottles per student. Her homeroom students will
receive a complementary pass to a home athletic
event courtesy of Ms. Barbara Brown, Principal.
Mrs. Brown states that this is her
pleasure to assist the efforts to make the
student body aware and to be concerned for
others that have been devastated by the
hurricane. Charitable giving is another shining
example of why Pittsylvania County
Schools is A Great Place to Learn and Work!

Please allow me this
opportunity to personally invite you to attend
the 40th Annual College Night on Tuesday,
September 18, 2012, at the Institute for
Advanced Learning & Research. The event begins
at 7:00 p.m. and should conclude by 8:30 p.m.
Presently, there are college and university
representatives scheduled to attend in addition
to the many charitable organizations that are
supporting the College Night program. Attending
College Night is an excellent opportunity for
scholars and parents to get a head start on the
college selection process and acquire important
information regarding student services. Exposure
to potential opportunities for advanced learning
is another shining example of why Pittsylvania
County Schools is A Great Place to Learn
and Work!
