August 6, 2012

On behalf of the Pittsylvania County School Board, may I take this opportunity to welcome you back to “A Great Place to Learn and Work!” Indeed, we are fortunate to have you working with us. We eagerly anticipate an opportunity to build relationships with each of you.

Our mission is to educate and nurture students to be successful and productive citizens. As we begin this school year, we talk of high expectations and lofty standards of excellence. Our vision is to be recognized as having an innovative, challenging and exemplary school system. Our mission is to educate and nurture students to be successful and productive citizens.

As we begin the 2012-2013 school year, I am of the opinion that we are at a significant moment in the history of this school division. I begin with a personal challenge for each of us.

We must insist on a climate of high expectations for ourselves and for the members of our team.

  • I am urging you to inspire your team to make a high commitment to quality.

  • I am challenging you to help your team reveal their hidden potential.

  • I am encouraging you to cultivate your team’s desire and passion to be at their best in spite of their circumstances.

We must demonstrate to our team that we have complete confidence in their abilities by encouraging them to take risks, empowering them to make decisions and holding them accountable for the results.

We must provide our team with inspirational, motivational and informational feedback.

Finally, we must assist our team in developing the courage to persevere during these demanding and challenging times.

Tom Peters, in his book, A Passion for Excellence, provides the secret to winning with people. He writes, “There is no magic: only people who find and nurture champions, dramatize company goals and direction, build skills and teams, spread irresistible enthusiasm. They are cheerleaders, coaches, storytellers and wanderers. They encourage, excite, teach, listen, facilitate. Their actions are consistent. They say people are special and treat them that way --- always.”

Information regarding the 2012-2013 health and dental insurance rates are attached for your review and perusal. Please be advised that our health insurance rates for the division increased by an average of 9.8%. The Pittsylvania County School Board pays $5,100 annually towards the Anthem health insurance premium for active employees.
