September 5, 2011
A 2007 USA TODAY/Gallup Poll found
that 71 percent of Americans called 9/11 the most
memorable news event of their lifetime. America changed
irrevocably on September 11, 2001, when terrorism struck
in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania. This week
is the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the
United States of America. Those of us who lived through
that day will never forget it. Each year people around
the country set aside time to remember those who died on
that horrific day. Three (3) Pittsylvania County high
schools have scheduled remembrance ceremonies in
recognition of the events of 9-11-2001. Tunstall High
School will have a JROTC ceremony commencing at 9:00
a.m. Cadets at Dan River High School will have a JROTC
memorial ceremony commencing at 9:50 a.m. and the
program at Chatham High School will begin at 2:00 p.m.
Senior Army Instructors David King (THS), Ronnie Emerson
(DRHS) and Rod Henderson (CHS) are in charge of planning
and coordinating the events.
Section 22.1-92, Code of Virginia, requires school
divisions to prepare and distribute “notification of the
estimated average per-pupil cost for public education in
the school division for the coming year” as well as

for the previous school year.” I thought it a good idea

Regent is developing a program to help
provisionally licensed special educators get the
coursework they need to accomplish the requirements of the
five (5) year renewable license for the Special Education
K-12 General Curriculum. There may be professionals in
Pittsylvania County who are provisionally licensed and
need to take classes. It is my understanding that most of
the courses are offered online and are developed for those
working full-time. For more information, please contact
Hannah Duke at (757) 352-4277 or by e-mail at
hannmil@regent.edu. Also, you may click on this

Congratulations to the
administration and staff at Tunstall High School
and Tunstall Middle School. It is my
understanding that members of the staff lost
over 550 pounds from February to May, 2011.
Indeed, this is a quite impressive feat.
Indications are that the commitment to living
healthier lifestyles began this week at both
locations. Please take the opportunity to offer
words of encouragement and support to these
individuals and others in our division that are
staying active and getting fit! By improving
individually, the entire organization gets
better and ensures that Pittsylvania County
Schools will remain A Great Place to Learn and
Work!
Please join me in
congratulating Mr. Waverly Hubbard, Custodian at
Mt. Airy Elementary School, on his selection as
Pittsylvania County Schools’ Employee of the
Week. Please click on the following link to find

Please be reminded that progress
reports (interim reports) for the first six-weeks are
scheduled to be disseminated to parents on Tuesday,
September 6, 2011. School Board Policy IKH-PC, Grading
System, requires the following:
-
Elementary Schools – “At the
end of the third week of each six weeks marking
period, school developed interim reports will be
sent to the parent of all students in grades K-5.”
-
Middle Schools – “At the end of
the third week of each six weeks marking period,
school developed interim reports will be sent to the
parent of students in grades 6-8.”
-
High Schools – “At the end of
the third week of each six weeks marking period,
school-developed interim reports will be sent to
parents of students in grades 9-12.”
Please
allow me this opportunity to personally invite you to
attend the 39th Annual College Night on
Tuesday, September 13, 2011, at the
Institute for Advanced Learning & Research. The event
begins at 7:00 p.m. and should conclude by 8:30 p.m.
Presently, there
are college and university representatives scheduled
to attend in addition to the many charitable
organizations that are supporting the College Night
program. Attending College Night is an excellent
opportunity for scholars and parents to get a head
start on the college selection process and acquire
important information regarding student services.
Exposure to potential opportunities for advanced
learning is another shining example of why
Pittsylvania County Schools is A Great Place to
Learn and Work! |
