The Human Resources Department, under the direction of Ms. Clarissa Knight, Assistant Superintendent, is planning to collect donations of non-perishable food items needed for distribution to God’s Storehouse and the Northern Pittsylvania County Food Bank during this Christmas season. The staff is requesting your support and will place containers in each department (Central Office, Maintenance Office, Educational and Cultural Center [ECC], Transportation and Information Technology) for donations of items during the month of December. The following non-perishable food items are needed:

  • Peanut butter

  • Bagged dry beans (especially pintos)

  • Cereal

  • Canned meat (tuna, chicken, salmon, etc.)

  • Canned fruit

  • Canned vegetables

  • Spaghetti sauce

  • Salad dressings

  • Pasta noodles

  • Rice

  • Sugar

  • Flour

  • Powdered milk

  • Baby formula

  • Ensure

  • Toiletries

The Calendar Committee, under the direction of Dr. Lillian Holland, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, has posted the first draft of the 2012-2013 school calendar. Please take time to review the calendar and provide your feedback by Monday, November 28, 2011. The next meeting of the Calendar Committee is slated for Wednesday, November 30, 2011. Recently, the Dan River High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) conducted a school wide food drive for God's Store House. The club collected over 1250 items of food for the less fortunate in our community. Charitable giving is another shining example of why Pittsylvania County Schools is A Great Place to Learn and Work!

Tunstall High School Senior, Logan Andrepont, and English and Creative Writing Teacher Mariah Sells, both placed 2nd in the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History's Visions Writing Contest. Logan placed 2nd in the high school division while Ms. Sells placed 2nd in the adult division. This activity was initiated from a newly formed poetry club at Tunstall High School called The Poetry Effect. Please join me in offering congratulations to these two (2) worthy individuals.

Southside Elementary School held its Math Night and Science Fair on Thursday, November 17, 2011. All grades (K-5) were represented. There were over 200 projects entered into the fair. Participation ribbons were given to everyone. Ribbons for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and honorable mention were awarded for grades K-2. Ribbons for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th as well as honorable mention were awarded to grades 3 through 5. After the Science Fair, parents participated in Math Bingo. Winners received multiplication and division games, CD’s and checkers games. Many thanks go out to the science fair judges, Ms. Ann Cassada, Director of Secondary Education, Dr. Larry Aaron, Gifted Resource Teacher, Ms. Scharlotte Cassell, Gifted Resource Teacher, and Ms. Laura Wiles, Teacher. Also, on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, the Kindergarten students at Southside Elementary School performed their Thanksgiving Reflections program. Students dressed up as Pilgrims and Indians and sang songs and recited poetry related to the holiday. Accolades go out to the students, faculty, staff and families who helped make this event possible.

The Teachers’ Advisory Council will meet Monday, November 28, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. The agenda includes discussion items from all departments including Business, Human Resources, Information Technology, Instructional Services and Support Services. Should you wish to have your comments heard, please be sure to consult with your building representative.

 

The Salary Taskforce will meet at the School Board Office Administration Building on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. Please be sure to submit any comments you may wish to be heard to your building representative.

The Budget Calendar has been approved for the 2011-2012 school year. Public presentation of budget priorities may be presented to the School Board on December 13, 2011. Other dates and times relative to the budget process are to follow. Now is the time to begin reviewing new initiatives and submitting them to your supervisor. The School Board has adopted a process that can be outlined by your immediate supervisor. On behalf of the Pittsylvania County School Board, may I say thanks for your continued involvement in the budget process.

The 2012-2013 budget requests and initiatives are due to Mr. Don Johnson, Assistant Superintendent for Business, or Ms. Tracey Worley, Budget Supervisor, by Friday, December 16, 2011.
