David Cottrell, in his book, The Magic Question, asks, “What difference do we make?” I am convinced that most of us live our lives with hope of making a difference in the world. William Pollard once wrote that “People want to work for a cause, not just for a living.” I am of the opinion that this has been the driving influence for Pittsylvania County Schools. Indeed, we are successful because our people are connected to a greater cause --- “to educate and nurture students to be successful and productive citizens.” Your passion is the fuel that drives this organization. Even during difficult times, like these past four (4) years, you have figured out a way to get things done. Your passion is the difference-maker! Listen to what Horst Schultze, former CEO of the Ritz Carlton says: “You are nothing unless it comes from your heart. Passion, caring, really looking to create excellence. If you perform functions only and go to work only to do processes, then you are effectively retired.” He finishes by saying, “And it scares me. Most people I see by the age of twenty-eight (28) are retired.”

Recently I read about a team of researchers that followed a group of 1,500 MBA’s over a period of 20 years. The participants were divided into two groups (A-B).
  • Group A (83% of the participants) was composed of people on a career path solely for the purpose of making money.
  • Group B (17% of the participants) was composed of people who wanted to do what they wanted to do now and worry about the money later.

The results of the study were interesting.

  •  At the end of the 20 year period, 101 of the 1,500 had become millionaires.
  • All but 1 (100/101) of the millionaires came from Group B (the group that had chosen to do what they loved).

Whether or not any of us become millionaires remains to be seen; however, we can say with assurance that you have impacted the lives of countless individuals in this school community because you:

  • Remain confident in your abilities
  • Maintain the courage of your convictions
  • Speak to the needs of the people in your community
  • Continue to share many acts of kindness no matter whether they be great or small.

On behalf of the Pittsylvania County School Board may I take this opportunity to say thank you for all you do to make this A Great Place to Learn and Work!

This will be the final Superintendent’s Minute for the 2011-2012 school year; however, as it becomes necessary, I will provide periodic updates during the course of the summer to help keep everyone informed of important school-related issues. We have been sending these weekly messages out to staff since November 4, 2003. It is my hope that you have found these communiqués to contain some valuable and pertinent information. I have heard from several of you indicating appreciation for having received the weekly updates. Keeping with the spirit of continuous improvement and instructive feedback, please respond to one or both of the following questions:

  • Should we continue to provide this type of information to staff each week?
  • What should be done to improve the process?

During the past several years Pittsylvania County Schools has included on its homepage an instructional supply listing for elementary, middle and high schools. School administrators may feel free to send the supply listing via e-mail to Ms. Kim Clifton, Webmaster. It is requested that these be submitted in Word (or Excel) format for posting.

Dan River High School students in Ms. Kelly Merricks' physics class recently participated in the Education Day competition at King's Dominion. The students entered two roller coasters. The first, "Wild Thang" constructed by Dabrous Williams, Tiffany Scarce, Ricki Smithers and Courtney Smithers won the "Most Thrilling Ride" certificate. The other, "Flight Simulator" constructed by Jeremy Hodnett, Rodger Isom III "Trey", Josh Joyce, Taylor Foust and Kaleb Barker won the plaque for best overall coaster for high schools. Congratulations to the students and Kudos to Ms. Merricks for providing support and direction.

Recently, students at Gretna Elementary School were treated to a day of bouncing on inflatables. The K-5 students demonstrating academic success and citizenship earned the privilege of participation at the event. Everyone considered the activity a huge success at Gretna Elementary School.
