March 26, 2012

The following is a listing of budget reductions that will be recommended by this office to the School Board at its Tuesday, March 27, 2012, public hearing. The public hearing will begin at 6:00 p.m. It is expected that the Board will review these recommendations and take action immediately following the public hearing. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012. The remainder of the day is designated as a Teacher Workday. Teachers will use this time to plan, consult, grade papers, prepare bulletin boards, etc. Please be reminded that all teacher aides and nurses work a full day.

Section 22.1-92, Code of Virginia, requires school divisions to prepare and distribute “notification of the estimated average per-pupil cost for public education in the school division for the coming year” as well as “actual per-pupil State and local education expenditures for the previous school year.” I thought it a good idea to share this information with you regarding the data related to actual per-pupil expenditures for fiscal year 2011 for Pittsylvania County Schools. The following information is included for your perusal:

Thus far, my experiences in Pittsylvania County Schools’ classrooms have been interesting, enlightening and engaging. Although my visits have resulted in “snapshots” of what is taking place in the classrooms, there are certain fundamental instructional practices that I am focusing on during these “walk-through” visits.

  • Do the students know what they are learning?

  • Are students activating their prior knowledge?

  • Are students provided think time?

  • Do students actively participate in their learning?

  • Is the learning objective posted and understood by the students?

  • Are measurements being used to assess learning?

  • What is the engagement level of the students?

  • Does the classroom environment contribute to student learning?

  • Is the use of technology being successfully integrated into the instructional program?

This week I have the pleasure of visiting:

  • Chatham Middle School, Thursday, March 29, 2012, from 12:00 Noon until 3:00 p.m.

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Ronnie Younger, Custodian at Southside Elementary School,  on his selection as Pittsylvania County Schools’ Employee of the Week. Please click on the following link to find out what our employees do to make this A Great Place to Learn and Work! http://www.pcs.k12.va.us/staff/employee-of-week/2011-2012/.

Recently, Brosville Elementary School students, parents and staff celebrated Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss' Birthday. Specifically, parents were invited to have lunch with their child and to share in a family reading session after lunch. Also, Mr. Robert Joyce, Brosville Elementary School Librarian, attended and presented a session at the Roanoke Regional Conference of the Virginia Association of School Librarians in Salem, Virginia, on March 19, 2012. The presentation was entitled “Contentment in Library and Content Subject Lessons.” He shared with other elementary school librarians in the Roanoke region how he integrates science and social studies SOL content into library information literacy lessons.

Dan River Middle School held its 6th annual Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart event on March 16, 2012. Over 200 students collected donations totaling over $3,700 for the American Heart Association. The event was coordinated by Physical Education teachers Melanie Gilbert and Earl Glass.

Ms. Anita Cummings, 6th grade Tunstall Middle School teacher, was the grant recipient of monies used to purchase an Interactive Watershed Model. The grant was given by the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce. Virginia Watersheds are SOL studies of 6th graders in the spring, and this model allows hands-on interactions for students to create ways, visually note, and understand more clearly how everyday surface actions (factories, fertilizers, construction, road vehicles, etc.) may cause ground water pollution.

Recently, Kentuck Elementary School held a Science Expo for students, parents and staff. Accolades go out to Ms. Kelly Merricks, Ms. Melissa Cassell and Ms. Elizabeth Kirby, Dan River High School Science Teachers, who judged students' projects.
