Happy New Year! It is my sincere hope that you are returning thoroughly refreshed and fully renewed. Traditionally, most of us begin the New Year with a list of resolutions in an attempt to improve our quality of life. Recently, I came across an article by Richard Koestner that provides some interesting facts about New Year's resolutions.

  • 50% of adults in North America will make a New Year's resolution.

  • The top two resolutions are behavioral commitments related to improving one's health namely to cease smoking and decrease one's consumption of alcohol.

  • Most people fail in adhering to their stated New Year's resolutions. Specifically, 22% fail after one week, 40% after one month, 50% after three months, 60% after six months, and 81% after twenty-four months.

According to the article, there are three (3) reasons for failing to achieve one's stated goals:

  1. Unclear and vague goals.

  2. Failure to gauge one's progress toward the stated goals.

  3. Weak self-control and self-regulation when facing challenges that impede one's ability to achieve the stated goals.

May I take this opportunity to say thank you to the staff for staying committed to our vision of being recognized as having an innovative, challenging and exemplary school division. Indeed, our mission has been to educate and nurture our students to be successful and productive citizens. These are values and commitments that have remained in the forefront of the Pittsylvania County educational system.

The Pittsylvania County School Board held a reorganizational meeting on January 2, 2012. Mr. Calvin “Bunky” Doss (Callands-Gretna) was elected Chairman. Mr. Neal Oakes (Dan River) was elected Vice-Chairman. Both terms are effective immediately. Other members of the Board include Wayne Robertson (Chatham-Blairs), Mr. Charles Miller (Banister), Mr. Morris Stowe (Tunstall), Mr. Don Moon (Staunton River) and Mr. Todd Sanders (Westover). Regular School Board meetings will be held at the School Board Administration Building, Chatham, Virginia, on the second Tuesday of the month with the time being set as follows:

  • The closed meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the regular business meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.

  • An exception is necessary for the April, 2012, meeting due to the Spring Break Holiday. The meeting will be conducted on Thursday, April 5, 2012.

Disciplinary Committee meetings were set on the first Monday of each month (if necessary) at 6:00 p.m. at the School Board Administration Building, Chatham, Virginia, with the exception of the September, 2012, meeting which will be conducted on Monday, September 10, 2012.

Access to dictionaries is an important factor in learning to read. For the past six years the Chatham Rotary Club has worked with the Rotary Clubs in Danville to give dictionaries to all 3rd grade students in Pittsylvania County. This year the Chatham Rotary Club bought and distributed almost 200 dictionaries to 3rd grade students in Chatham Elementary School, Gretna Elementary School, Mt. Airy Elementary School and Hurt Elementary School.

Mrs. Amy Lovern's class participated in the "Read Your Way to the Race" program along with many other students in Pittsylvania County and other counties. Her class was chosen to win the pizza party at the race track. The students were given a tour of the Presidential Suite and the media room where they ate pizza. The students were also given a short ride around the race track in a car. The students had a great time. It pays to read every day!

Mrs. Vera Glass, Principal of Gretna Middle School, shares this bit good news. Ms. Allison Revis, Family and Consumer Science Teacher, has been awarded a grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth in the amount of $500. Eighth grade students will be participating in a Pentathlon on January 19, 2012. The Pentathlon will consist of five physical activities, healthy snacks and health related handouts. Encouraging healthier lifestyles is another shining example of why Pittsylvania County Schools is A Great Place to Learn and Work!
