December 19, 2011

Students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2011. Teachers and teacher aides will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. Division operations will cease at 3:00 p.m. in observance of the Christmas Holiday. Department heads and building administrators are requested to please plan work schedules accordingly.

During the 1800’s Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. Included are the words “peace on earth, good will toward men.” During WWI, trench warfare was a common practice. The term “No Man’s Land” was the area between the trenches where the fighting and the dying took place. On Christmas Eve, 1914, a strange event occurred that involved the British and German soldiers. A truce was called. No Man's Land became a meeting ground, as muddy, cold soldiers emerged from their trenches. The joy of Christmas carols rang out as gifts, jokes and tobacco were exchanged between men who had just hours before shot at one another. One German, a juggler, put on a show in the middle of No Man's Land. The English produced a soccer ball and a pick-up game broke out. The Germans won 3-2. This Christmas turned out to be a joyous one for these soldiers on the Western Front. I wonder if they recalled and pondered Longfellow’s words as they took time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. This Christmas, let’s all agree to call a truce from the hustle and bustle of the Holiday season. Let’s agree to take time to focus on fun, family, fellowship and faith. It is my Holiday hope that you and your families find “peace” and “good will” during this joyous season. On behalf of the Pittsylvania County School Board, may I take this opportunity to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Recently, the Tunstall High School DECA club collected jeans and jackets to be distributed to the local homeless shelter, House of Hope. The students donated almost 500 pairs of jeans and jackets. One student said, "I am so glad you all are doing something for the community like this." Kudos go out to the students for making charitable contributions to those who are less fortunate. Instructors Lisa Baynes, Donna Hutson and Tony Dillow deserve accolades for providing direction and support during this noteworthy and worthwhile project.

Stony Mill Elementary School has a long standing tradition called the “Giving Tree.” Through the years, students have brought various items to donate to the tree: packs of Kool-Aid, toothbrushes, toys, paper products and flashlights. This year the students are decorating the tree with stuffed animals in a project deemed “Christmas Creatures.” So far, two trees are completely covered in teddy bears, monkeys, dogs, cats, elephants and even a couple of hippopotamuses! The stuffed animals will be donated to God’s Pit Crew who will distribute them throughout the coming year to children who are victims of natural disasters. Giving Tree coordinator and Physical Education Instructor, Katherine Blair says, “Christmas is a time to think of others. Giving stuffed animals is a simple way to say ‘we care’ to children who need to hear it. I am so proud of the students of Stony Mill who are sharing these gifts in the true spirit of the season.”

The Future Farmers of America (FFA) and the students at Tunstall Middle School have collected 4,046 cans of food in support of the Salvation Army’s canned food drive. The winning homerooms were: grade 6, Mrs. Ava Baines; grade 7, Mrs. Jill Collins; and grade 8, Mr. Michael Nemec. The drive was a huge success and helped the students to learn the true meaning of Christmas - giving to others. Charitable giving is another shining example of why Pittsylvania County Schools is A Great Place to Learn and Work!

In November of 2011, Chatham Elementary School celebrated Veterans Day and paid tribute to our nation’s veterans in a very unique and personal way. An American flag was constructed of red, white, and blue stars displaying the names of veterans and current military personnel. Each name represented a family member or personal friend of a student or staff-member at Chatham Elementary School. One student representing each grade level and classroom was photographed with the flag. Teaching patriotism and love of Country is another shining example of why Pittsylvania County Schools is A Great Place to Learn and Work!
