School Health Advisory Board
The 1992 General Assembly enacted legislation requiring that each school division have a school health advisory board. The purpose of the advisory board is to advise school divisions about the development and implementation of school health programs including health instruction, the school environment, and health services.

The school health advisory board includes parents, students, health professionals and educators. In addition, representatives may be included from community agencies, business and industry, child advocacy groups, volunteer health agencies, the school division staff, and institutions of higher education. Each advisory board is required to meet a least semi-annually and to provide an annual report on the status and needs of student health in the school division to any relevant school, the school board, the Virginia Department of Health, and the Virginia Department of Education.

  • Tdap – What is it?

The Tdap vaccine provides protection against tetanus (lockjaw) diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). Because of the rise of pertussis (whooping cough) in our society, it is very important to receive the Tdap vaccine if a person falls into any of the categories below:

  • any adult under 65 who has never gotten Tdap should substitute it for the next tetanus booster dose which is recommended every 10 years

  • adults under 65 who expect to have close contact with an infant younger than 12 months of age (including women who may become pregnant)

  • adults under 65 who have never gotten Tdap

  • healthcare workers under 65 who have direct patient contact in hospitals or clinics

  • new mothers (and spouses) who have never gotten Tdap should do so as soon as possible after delivery

  • any student entering the 6th grade who has not had a tetanus-containing vaccination in the last 5 years
