Jim Tolbert of Support Services

Mr. Jim Tolbert, School-Home Coordinator/Attendance Officer, has been selected as Support Services Employee of the Week.

Mr. Tolbert notes that he has been fortunate to be employed by Pittsylvania County Schools for the past 25 years. He began his career as a teacher at Gretna High School. For the past 21 years Mr. Tolbert has served as one of our School-Home Coordinators and as an Attendance Officer.

Mr. Tolbert shares that “working with students and their families has been challenging, yet very rewarding.” He also noted that “Seeing those you work with graduate from high school or move on to the next grade makes it worth all of the effort.”

Mr. Tolbert also serves on our Division Truancy Multidisciplinary Team. He was instrumental in the development of the Truancy Intervention Program (TIP), a collaborative program with the Juvenile Justice System and serves on the Family Assessment and Planning Team (FAPT). Mr. Tolbert provides services to assist students and their families and collaborates with community providers/agencies to assure the delivery of needed supports. He also serves as our Division Santa, delivering Christmas gifts to families.

Mr. Tolbert earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Science degree from Duquesne University. Mr. Tolbert represents our Division on Regional and State Juvenile Justice committees and advocates for students and families at risk.

Mr. Tolbert lives in Lynchburg and is the proud father of four sons and  seven grandchildren. He has been happily married for the past 16 years to his wonderful wife, Patti, who works as a registered nurse.

In his spare time, Mr. Tolbert enjoys organic herb and vegetable gardening, reading, walking daily, and visiting with his children and grandchildren. He is also a loyal Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan.

Mr. Tolbert is fondly called “The Man” by students and families he visits and “Father Jim” for those of us who are blessed to work with him on a daily basis. His expertise and genuine concern for students and staff evidence his commitment to our school division. Mr. Tolbert’s work ethic is unmatched, and he is a valued member of our Support Services Team.

Please join us as we honor Mr. Jim Tolbert for his efforts to improve the lives of the students he serves.
