Employee of the Week

When will my employee be recognized?

Connie Ray Yeatts of Chatham Middle School

Teaching for 28 years has been a journey for Mr. Yeatts.  Influenced by Mr. Roy Shirlen, his high school industrial arts teacher, Mr. Yeatts earned BS and MA degrees in Industrial Arts Education from East Tennessee University.  His teaching career began shortly after college graduation with Campbell County Schools at Brookville High School where he taught general industrial arts, which included fine woodworking, leather working, metal working and technical drawing.  Later, he took a position at Rosemont Jr. High School in Norfolk, where he taught the World of Manufacturing, metal and woodworking.

Mr. Yeatts returned to Brookville High for 3 years before leaving to work at Limitorque Corporation where he was employed as an engineering technician in the research and development lab and later as manager of the graphic arts department.  He then was hired by Technical Publication Service to manage the display division at that company.

After 16 years in industry, Mr. Yeatts returned to Brookville High for a year before going to Brookville Middle School where he taught Synergistics.  During the time at Brookville High and Middle Schools, Mr. Yeatts was involved in the Technology Student Association where he took many students to competitions where they won not only on the local and state levels, but also the national level as well.

In 2004 he was hired by Pittsylvania County Schools to be the technology teacher at Chatham Middle School.   For a few years, he and his wife, Debbie, were coaches for the CMS FIRST Lego Team.    Throughout his teaching career, Mr. Yeatts’ students have been able to explore a variety of experiences in the field of technology.

At the end of this year, Mr. Yeatts will retire.  The journey has been unforgettable for him and hopefully for the students he has taught.    Now the pathway along the journey will turn as he steps from the role of an educator in the school system to spend more time with his wife and family. His new journey will include teaching his grandsons some of the skills he has learned over the years and putting those skills to work in numerous projects at home.
