Darrell B. Wilkerson, Jr. has been a
dedicated employee of Pittsylvania County Schools for 26 years. His value
to this organization may be measured on many levels. He has a keen
ability to work with all employees, from a building level custodian to
chairman of the school board. His technical expertise coupled with his
problem-solving skills makes him invaluable to our division. As a Network
Manager, he plays a critical role in making certain that our networks are
fully operational both day and night.
His daily responsibilities also include scheduling and managing eight
technicians and the support needed to efficiently serve the needs of 1,500
employees and 9,100 students.
Specifically, Mr. Wilkerson and the network
management staff manage 80 servers, 3,500 computers, a new Cisco Voice
over IP system (VoIP), Internet filtering, email management, virus
software management, active directory (network user management),
management of our primary firewall as well as our storage solutions and
backup systems.
Additionally, his expertise is crucial in the oversight of the mission
critical fiber and microwave networks. He supervises the management of
our extensive industry-level microwave network of 54, 100 and 300 mbps to
small schools with its interface to our six major campus nodes on the 38
mile fiber network.
It must also be noted that he played a key role in the supervision of the
installation of new network infrastructure for our four high schools
during their two-year renovation project.
