Maxine Diggs
Central Office/Support Services |
“Thank you for recognizing me as the
employee of the week. I am grateful and humbled for being selected among
the colleagues in the Department of Special Education and Support
Services. My term in the Department has been brief, but a lot of valuable
experiences, knowledge and information have increased and broadened my
comprehension in understanding the educational process. I believe meeting
the mental, emotional, social and physical needs of children come before
the academics. A genuine demonstration of love, a nurturing attitude, and
a positive environment conducive to learning are necessary components for
student success."

Employed in the county for thirty-six years,
Mrs. Diggs taught eighth grade at Blairs Jr. High School for six years and
Gretna Middle School for 17 years. She received a Master’s degree and was
promoted as Assistant Principal of Chatham High School. Two years later
she was assigned Assistant Principal at Gretna Elementary School and then
she became the Principal of Mt. Airy Elementary School.
During the seven years as Principal of Mt. Airy, Mrs. Diggs continued to
expand upon the foundation laid before her term by principals such as
Jeremiah Hemingway, Aubrey Yeatts and Vickie Murphy. During her tutelage,
Mt. Airy Elementary School was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School, a
Competence to Excellence School, and a Title I Distinguished School. Mt.
Airy made AYP for the seven years she was the principal. For several
years, Mt. Airy was also recognized for having the best attendance rate
and serving the highest number of student breakfasts.
Trips to Chuck E. Cheese, Skatetown, and other special places,
extraordinary field days, and special assemblies were important to Mrs.
Diggs as she strived to develop the whole child. When asked about her
successes at Mt. Airy, Mrs. Diggs immediately acknowledged the
collaborative efforts of excellent teachers, supportive parents, super
students, and a proud community.
She is married to Robert Diggs, a retired school teacher, and she is the
mother of two daughters, LaShawnda Strambler and Shannon Diggs. She
devotes lots of time to her granddaughters, Christina and Chrislan, and a
nephew (like a son) Asa.
She is a member of the Elba Missionary Baptist Church. She is President of
the choirs, a Deaconess, and President of the Scholarship Committee. She
is also a teacher for the adult Wednesday Night Bible Study.
Being with family and friends, reading, traveling and attending
Sister-O-Sister Club meetings are her favorite things to do. Her strong
faith in God, perseverance, and determination contribute to the optimistic
way she faces the many challenges in her life. She quotes Maya Angelou, “I
have learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life
goes on, and it will be better tomorrow."
In whatever capacity she has served in Pittsylvania County Schools, she
has always served and made decisions in the best interest of students.
Children always come first. |
