WAN Phase III design and link specifications

The White Oak Tower shown above acts as a hub for our WAN backbone.  As installation of the 100Mbps links continue the backbone is taking shape as shown in the diagram above.  Four microwave paths are required 9.4 miles to Tunstall High, 7.4 miles to Dan River High, 14.0 miles to Gretna High and 1.5 miles to the NOC (Network Operations Center).

The two 4' parabolic antennas are now active to Tunstall and Dan River High Schools from the White Oak Tower passing 100Mbps of data. The new larger 6' dish is directed to the Gretna High School tower.  Due to the high wind loading factor of the 6' dish and the long 14 mile path, a new larger tower is being constructed at Gretna that will provide the addition strength to handle the wind loading and add stability to the positioning of the dish.  This link should be active in two weeks.  As the distance increases, pointing accuracy becomes more important.

The small flat panel antenna provides the 100Mbps feed from the DS3 at the NOC.   Once the four links become operational the regional ATM DS1 connections will be dropped and all 22 locations will be served from the one DS3 at the NOC.

Meet the IT Network Specialists

Virginia Tech Math Emporium a model worth emulating.
Pittsylvania County Schools has completed the installation of 22 state of the art computer labs, wired offices, wired the library, installed both an NT server and a SUN server at each school.  Our WAN provides high speed Internet access to the desktop via ATM and high-band width microwave links.   The 85 miles of wireless connections along with some frame relay form the phase I WAN backbone. This provides high bandwidth  Internet access to each school.

Twenty-two computer labs with high-bandwidth connections spanning 1,000 sq. miles. Now we are moving into the next phase of our technology integration plan.   Each classroom has been wired for network access via CAT5 cable or will be connected via a wireless link to the central school LAN.  Plans are to finish the computer installations in the high school classrooms by the summer of 2000.  Phase II when completed this summer will provide the school system with 114 miles of wireless links including a complete 100 Mbps microwave WAN backbone to each region of the county.
