Pittsylvania County Schools Career and Technical Education classes are exciting places to learn. According to John Dewey education is not a preparation for life but is life itself. Students enrolled in career and technical programs have the opportunity to experience real-life simulated work settings that reinforce workplace expectations and to apply information that is learned in all subject areas. Career and technical programs provide reinforcement and application of the Virginia Standards of Learning. Just as Dewey advocated long ago, students are experiencing life each day in vocational education classes. |
| Students
in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to enroll in career and technical
programs beginning with six-week exploratory programs in 6th grade to intense occupational programs in
high school. All four comprehensive high schools, including Chatham High, Dan River High, Gretna High, and Tunstall High, have courses in
five programs areas: Agriculture, Business
and Information Technology,
Marketing, Technology, and Family and Consumer Science. Juniors and seniors from all four
high schools have the opportunity to pursue intense occupational programs at
Pittsylvania
Career & Technical Center (PCTC). Two-year Trade and Industrial programs
at PCTC are available, including Auto Service Technology, Auto Body, Carpentry,
Cosmetology, Electronics/Computer Repair Service Technology, Electricity, Heating &
Air Conditioning, Criminal Justice, Masonry, and Welding. Students may also enroll in Food Occupations and
Health and Medical Services at PCTC. Select career and technical courses offer dual enrollment credit with
Danville Community College allowing students to receive college credit while still in high
school. Cooperative education and apprenticeship programs provide work based
learning
opportunities for students. Intracurricular career and technical student organizations provide
leadership development opportunities for students. |
