On September 9, 2011, the newly elected HOSA officers held a school-wide 9/11 presentation. The power point showed a powerful video clip and interesting facts. A candle was lit in memory for each flight and the lives lost. Special guests attending were members of the Blairs and Mt. Hermon Volunteer Fire Departments, JROTC members, and Deputy Tim West from the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Department.

HOSA members also went on a field trip to Danville Regional Medical Center for a tour on September 21, 2011. The tour was led by Darlene Hankins, DRMC Volunteer Coordinator, and Virginia Hylton, Pharmacy Tech Supervisor, conducted the pharmacy tour. Information about the pharmacy was also provided by Paul O’ Brien, Director of Pharmacy, and Mike Richardson, Pharmacist. Karen Stadler, Director of Radiology, gave a power point on nuclear radiology, and Linda D. Sokos, Infection Preventionist/Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, gave a presentation on infection control. The students greatly appreciated and enjoyed the tour.

To show our support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are having a school-wide Pink-Out on October 28, 2011. We have placed informational posters throughout the building for students and staff to read about cancer facts and statistics.

Members of HOSA plan to support our area veterans by marching in the Veterans Day Parade on November 6, 2011. We also have several other Community Service projects planned for the rest of the school year. We have just begun our clinical rotation at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, and the students are excited about the opportunity to start practicing the skills that they have learned in the classroom. In the HOSA creed we are reminded that by using the knowledge and skills we learn in the Health Occupations program we are on the pathway to becoming responsible citizens. The PCTC students are off to a great start!
