The Calendar Committee for 2018-2019 convened on October 30, 2017, at the School Board Office in Chatham. After much consideration and discussion, the committee made a recommendation for the proposed 2018-2019 school calendar.

Considerations included the following:

  • Instruction to students

  • SOL Program (Considered the amount of instruction and review prior to the testing windows opening [first and second semesters for high schools and end of year window for elementary and middle]. Testing window is set by the VDOE.)

  • Waiver for pre-Labor Day opening (Due the amount of average days lost according to Section 22.1-79.1, PCS qualifies for pre-Labor Day opening.)

  • 200-day teacher contract

  • Make-up days

  • Staff development

  • Collegial partnerships

  • Teacher Professional days/workshops

  • Conference nights

  • Coordination with other programs (Governor’s School, PCTC, DCC, Virtual Virginia AP classes, K12 virtual school, etc.)

  • Articulation with Danville Public Schools

Additional considerations included:

  • Due to VRS rulings and auditing regulations, the first day of any 10-month employee contract cannot begin on the 1st working day of the month of August.

  • The pros and cons of the current year calendar

  • Each semester 90 days (first semester to end prior to winter break)

  • Number of holidays for 12-month employees

  • A break each month for teachers and/or students

  • Open House to remain on Monday to provide adequate time for teachers to prepare classrooms and materials for parents/students. (Classroom supply lists are provided by the schools on the division website, at the school and in area stores to assist parents in preparation for their child’s needs.)

  • Division Professional Development Day at beginning of school will be on Tuesday with one day after to allow a day back in the classroom prior to opening day of school.

Employees, parents, students and the community are invited to review the proposed calendar. Each may make comments and/or suggestions that will be shared with the Calendar Committee at its next meeting on November 29. Please make sure that if you recommend a change, you also recommend a solution.
